NAUTICA JAPAN SS21 CHANNELS OVERSIZED RETRO STREET-YACHT STYLE

Akio Hasegawa has developed a throwback-minded approach in his work as a stylist, demarcating his output by way of the oversized, neo-trad elements that appear in work for brands like nanamica or AH.H. As the creative director of Nautica Japan, operated by chain retailer FREAK’S STORE, Hasegawa is only ramping up that rhetoric, taking the brand back to its ’90s roots by way of giant-fitting sportswear and street-leaning elements for Spring/Summer 2021. Drawing from ’80s and ’90s campaigns from the likes of Polo Ralph Lauren and Armani, Hasegawa has gone back to basics with his debut Nautica Japan lineup, serving billowing oxford shirts, generous sweaters and baggy jeans replete with old-school branding and washes. There are requisite elements of sportswear by way of packable anoraks and pants, coaches jackets, weather-resistant bucket hats and enormous cargo pants, hearkening back to the golden age of hip-hop and the birth of street culture. Instead of relaxed tailoring, which informed Hasegawa’s debut Fall/Winter 2020 range, SS21 leans casual, with enormous hoodies and knee-length shorts in both chino and denim varieties. Built-in drawstrings allow for easy waist cinching, but the preferred method of styling the branded pullovers and mock-neck shirts is to simply let the sleeves pool over the hand — cuffing option. There are even tall white socks finished with the Nautica logo to drive home the retro ethos. All of the latest Nautica Japan goods are available via FREAK’S STORE’s website.

NIKE'S NEW AIR MAX PRE-DAY IS CENTERED AROUND REDUCTIVE AND CIRCULAR DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Nike (NYSE:NKE -0.27%) has never been shy about touting the importance of Air Max to its brand ethos, even referring to it as the “embodiment of Nike design philosophy.” This bold statement is backed up by innovation after innovation, however — ranging from visible Air’s debut on the Air Max 1 in 1987 to the first full-length Air Max cushioning unit on the Air Max 97 in 1997 and the tremendous technological innovation of Air VaporMax in 2017. In 2021 Air Max is set to enter a new chapter centered around reductive and circular design principles, and the Air Max Pre-Day is here to serve as that chapter’s starting point. With a name inspired by the legendary Steve Prefontaine and the beginning of a new Air Max era, the Air Max Pre-Day fuses elements of late ’70s Nike classics with the current decade’s technical innovations and enhanced materials. Uppers blend finely-woven polyester mesh with ripstop, synthetics and smooth suedes while midsoles are cored out to show off the heel Air unit in full and decrease the shoe’s weight. This fully visible Air unit is the Air Max Pre-Day’s main example of “reductive design,” a practice that removes elements from an item to highlight its most vital component. The shoe’s circular nature is apparent in its construction: vamps and quarters are made of 100 percent recycled polyester, while each suede piece is fully recycled as well. From a looks standpoint, the Air Max Pre-Day’s inagural colorway mixes a volt-like shade with seafoam green and black. Upcoming makeups will be “washed-out versions of ’70s Nike Running styles,” according to the Swoosh. Look for the Nike Air Max Pre-Day to hit Nike SNKRS on Air Max Day, March 26. The MSRP is set at $130 USD.

DOLCE & GABBANA NOW SEEKS $600 MILLION IN DAMAGES FROM DIET PRADA

GETTY IMAGES / SOPA IMAGES Diet Prada is used to finding itself in fashion hot water, and Dolce & Gabbana isn't new to controversies. However, the luxury brand's defamation lawsuit just turned up the heat – on both counts. The lawsuit is part of the fallout from Dolce & Gabbana's disastrous 2018 #DGLovesChina campaign – a now-infamous ad featuring a Chinese model attempting to eat Italian food with chopsticks –when Diet Prada accused the luxury fashion house of racism. The saga continued when racist comments that allegedly originated from brand co-founder Stefano Gabbana's Instagram account surfaced and were published by Diet Prada, bringing the brand further under fire. In early 2019, Dolce & Gabbana filed an action for defamation in civil court in Italy, accusing Diet Prada’s founders of initiating a “smear campaign” and “serious and repeated defamatory conduct” aimed at damaging the Italian brand. Since then, D&G claims it has lost revenue and other opportunities. It has argued this was partly due to Diet Prada’s alleged defamatory reporting of the incident, as well as its “illegal publication of Stefano Gabbana’s private conversations” on Instagram. Now in a turn of events, Diet Prada has given their take on the battle. Talking to the Associated Press, founders Tony Liu and Lindsey Schuyler, announced how not only does the Italian brand demand €3 million (estimated at $3.6 million) in damages for Dolce & Gabbana and €1 million ($1.2 million) for Gabbana himself, but the fashion house is seeking €450 million (estimated $600 million) to "restore brand image since 2018". AP also reports the suit also "seeks more than$8.6 million euros for the cancellation of the Shanghai show, another 8.6 million euros for staff expenditures and 89.6 million euros for lost Asian sales from November 2018-March 2019." At the time of writing this, Diet Prada has raised more than $38,000 for its defense. The Fashion Law reports the duo behind Diet Prada has filed a lengthy formal answer to Dolce & Gabbana’s complaint, accusing the brand of “abusing” the judicial process and asking a court to remedy these charges. Dolce & Gabbana has yet to comment on the development, but Diet Prada made a statement on Instagram yesterday. “With so much anti-Asian hate spreading in the U.S., it feels wrong to continue to remain silent about a lawsuit that threatens our freedom of speech," it read. "We are a small company co-founded by a person of color, trying to speak out against racism in our own community."

WISDOM FUSES PRACTICALITY AND STYLE FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2021

Lightweight urban gear. Marrying utility with style, wisdom takes elements from technical apparel and remixes them to create a fashion-forward final project. The brand, which was founded in 2009, has presented its latest collection for Spring/Summer 2021 which continues its narrative of urban street and outdoor apparel. For this season, there is a focus on sustainability with repurposed and organic fabrics being used throughout. This means that technical fabrics such as polyester and nylon which traditionally rack up a large carbon footprint in production can be rocked without a guilty conscience. The collection uses roomy silhouettes to create comfortable items that are often elevated with a range of 3-D pockets for a utilitarian edge. Bringing some codes from streetwear into its world, wisdom also includes a range of graphics printed on t-shirts including a peace sign motif and one which depicts a television that replaces a man’s head.
