OFF-WHITE™’S LOSES QUOTATION MARK TRADEMARK APPLICATION

“PRODUCT BAG.” According to The Fashion Law, Virgil Abloh’s Off-White™ recently filed another quotation mark trademark with the U.S Patent and Trademark Office, this time for the phrase “PRODUCT BAG” and quotation marks surrounding it. Although the brand states in the claim that they have been using this phrase on the packaging for tops and bottoms since 2016. Noting issues with the request, the USPTO has declined the application, asserting that the abstract meaning would not make a difference to customers, who ‘perceive the mark as merely providing information about the packaging, which is a clear plastic bag.” Further explaining the decision, the attorney for the USPTO states that the “PRODUCT BAG” sign does not “identify and distinguish Off-White™ goods from others but instead literally describes the packaging. We wait to see whether Off-White™ will re-request this trademark, this time with more specific citings as to why the use of its quotation marks creates a connection between the mark and the goods identified in the application. SOMEONE JUST INVESTED $120 MILLION INTO ANOTHER BRILLIANT ELON MUSK IDEA

Elon Musk’s Boring Company recently received a sizable investment for its ambitious tunnel-digging project. Bloomberg reports that the company authorized the sale of $120 million in stock. Musk aims to energize the tunnel industry as he has done in the automotive and aerospace sectors. The chief investors in the round were 8VC, Vy Capital, Craft Ventures, Valor Capital and DFJ. Steve Jurvetson, a board member to SpaceX and Tesla, has also been listed as an investor, stating that, “We are delighted to be an investor in Boring,” adding that “Boring is a great example of the disruptive playbook we look for.” Prior to this, one of Boring’s more “disruptive” funding efforts garnered over $11 Million from the sale of flamethrowers and T-shirts. Boring’s current tender is a $48.7 million, mile-long project that will transport visitors around the Las Vegas Convention Center — dubbed LVCC Loop. The $120 million investment is in addition to the $113 million the company raised last year through various methods. Taking this into account, The Boring Company is now valued at around $920 million.

AMAZON PRIME OFFERS FREE ONE-DAY SHIPPING TO BOOST SALES

Amazon is continuing to get more bullish around its core retail division. The tech giant announced during its Q1 earnings call on Thursday that Prime members would soon be able to receive free one-day shipping. While other services like AWS and advertising have seen increased growth in the past year, its retail sales have dipped from 22 percent to 10 percent year-over-year, according to an analysis by The New York Times. Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky mentioned that the move to one-day shipping would cost the company about $800 million USD in the first quarter. In certain cities, Prime customers can already receive one-day shipping if they order items of $35 USD or more. The expedited shipping would not only encourage sales, but also promote Prime membership growth where Amazon has been investing heavily in original content, streaming services and discounts at Whole Foods to lure and retain members. Amazon also recently announced that it was partnering with Kohl’s to offer free returns in an attempt to improve the customer experience and bolster its physical presence. During the call, Amazon also introduced its Shipment Zero initiative, which aims to “make all customer shipments net zero carbon, with the goal of making 50% of all shipments net zero by 2030.”

MUHAMMAD ALI'S 1976 ALFA ROMEO IS FOR SALE ON EBAY

Calling all car and boxing fans — now is your chance to buy a sports car from the collection of none other than Muhammad Ali. A St. Louis, Missouri-based seller has put the 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce Series II that once belonged to the legendery boxer for sale on eBay. The car is currently listed for a buy-it-now price of $39,900 USD, or best offer. Though originally bought by Ali, the car was later owned by Ali’s good friend Tim Shanahan. The story goes that Ali didn’t want to buy the Alfa Romeo at all, but instead wanted to purchase a Rolls-Royce. He and Shanahan visted a dealership in Lake Forest, Illinois, but as it didn’t have any Rolls-Royce cars in stock Ali purchased the Alfa Romeo. The car was a gift for his wife, Veronica Porché, however as she didn’t know how to drive a stick shift, the car went mostly unused. We first heard about the car going up for auction in 2018. One of Ali’s Rolls-Royces went up for auction in 2018 as well. According to the eBay listing, the silver sports car now has 80,733 miles on it. Production on the convertible car ceased in 1981, so if you’re a fan of the style now may be only your only chance to get your hands on one. Head over to eBay to make a bet on Ali’s Alfa Romeo. Bidding will close on Wednesday at 7 p.m. EST. For more beautiful cars, see how this 19th century home turns classic cars into art. S
