Is It a Tote Bag? Is It A Basketball Jersey? Marni's New Design Is Kinda Both
It takes a few looks to fully get to grips with Marni's latest bag. After inspecting it for a while, you notice it uses the armholes from a vest as straps and a collar as a bag opening.
It's slightly surreal to see what looks like a vest being used to carry around someone's possessions and that's only exaggerated by the classic basketball jersey style that Marni has gone for. With colorful ribbing and the Italian fashion house's logo curved across the center, it's the type of jersey that we've all seen and worn throughout our lives — even if it was put on unwillingly during a sports lesson. Its instantly recognizable design almost lures you into a false sense of security before noticing that it's actually an unconventional bag design.
As we learned when we met the extended Marni family minutes after the final fitting for the labels SS22 show in Milan, taking a fun and lighthearted approach to fashion is central to the brand. This design was released as part of that collection alongside other bags such as a shiny blue PVC briefcase-style bag and a tiny calf-leather bag that is created to fit your AirPods.
While playfulness is a central theme throughout all of creative director Francesco Risso's designs, the label really likes to push the boat out with its bags, and previous seasons have shown that with everything from oversized handbags that are almost as tall as the models presenting them to fluffy pillow-like creations. This tank top-inspired piece is the latest to join the list of unconventional bags
